How To Pack For Baby’s Holiday Travels

How To Pack For Baby’s Holiday Travels

Leaving the house with a baby can seem like quite a chore. There always seems to be so many THINGS you need to bring, even just for a “quick” trip to the store. But come holiday time, the thought of leaving the house and traveling somewhere can seem like a full-on nightmare.

Yes, you do need to bring a lot of stuff, but no, it does not need to be the whole house! Try not to panic. Start preparing early and make yourself a list. Be sure to put toiletries or other liquids in a resealable plastic bag to guard against leaks. You may also want to put other small items like those teeny tiny socks, pacifiers, etc. in a bag so you can find them quickly and easily when needed, without having to hunt through your entire suitcase for them.

Here’s a list of the items that will be most useful for your baby when traveling this holiday season. You might even be able to cross some of these off the list depending on where and how far you’re going. If it’s a trip to grandma’s house, she may already have some of these items waiting for you so your car (or flight baggage) can be just a little bit lighter.

  • Waterproof Diaper Bag
  • Diapers – Plan on at least 1 diaper an hour for during your actual travel time, then add in a few extras for any travel delays, in addition to the amount of diapers you need for the length of your stay
  • Portable Changing Pad – You never know where you might have to lay your baby down, so bring along either a fold-up reusable one or a pack of the disposable ones
  • Blanket – Comes in handy to cover baby from drafty air conditioning, to help keep her/him cozy, and/or to cover both of you when nursing
  • Plastic Bags – Throw in soiled clothes and diapers until you can get to a garbage can or washing machine
  • Wipes
  • Diaper Cream
  • Hand Wash & Lotion
  • Tissues
  • Pacifiers (if your baby uses one) – Include extras in case if one gets lost in transit
  • Change of clothes for both you and baby – Don’t forget extra socks and a hat to protect against the cold!
  • Bibs
  • Feeding Utensils (if on solid foods)
  • Bottles (& formula, if using)
  • Snacks for both the baby and you – Keep that energy up!
  • Burp Cloths
  • Jacket (for baby and you!)
  • Nightlight – A soft, soothing light for nighttime feedings will help keep everyone calm in an unfamiliar place
  • A Booklight or Flashlight for you to read by or move around the room without disturbing the baby
  • Small Bottles of Baby Soap, Shampoo, etc.  – If flying, remember that all bottles must be less than 4oz.
  • Toothbrush/Baby Toothpaste (if using)
  • Hairbrush (if needed)
  • Boppy Pillow – For an easy way to sit baby down and to help with feedings in not-so-comfortable situations
  • Books and Small Toys for Entertainment (Bring a book for you too!)
  • Teething Toy (if needed)
  • A Comfort Cuddle Toy – Baby’s favorite stuffed animal or blanket
  • Baby Tylenol/Advil/Benadryl
  • Dish Soap & Brush – If you will be in a hotel or a place where you will need to wash out bottles and feeding utensils
  • Breast Pump (if needed)
  • Safety Items – Extra plug covers, door handle locks, etc. if your baby is moving around and you will be in a hotel or other area that is not properly protected
  • Portable Crib
  • Inflatable, Portable Baby Tub – If you’re staying for a while and foresee bath time, a portable tub makes it much easier in a new environment
  • Baby Carrier – Will you be out and about while you’re away? Bring your favorite baby carrier to make moving around easier and to keep your hands free to help with the food or gifts
  • Extendher – Bring your extendher to easily clip to your jacket or to anyone else who offers while you are away to keep baby warm while carrying him/her around
  • Collapsible Stroller – If you’re going to be there for a while, a stroller may come in handy
  • Baby Monitor – Not needed in a hotel room, but if you’re staying at someone else’s home, you may feel more comfortable being able to hear your baby if they’re in another room or on another floor
  • ID/Passports – If flying, don’t forget IDs for the whole family
  • Emergency Numbers – Bring along your baby’s doctor(s) number in case if you need to make any quick calls
  • Car Seat or appropriate restraints for your mode of transportation
  • Small First Aid Kit
  • Camera/Charger – Don’t forget your phone or favorite camera for all those great holiday shots and memories!

You can do this!
